How to take care of a Bouvardia?

Improved Bouvardia
Bouvardia is a beautiful flower with a rich history. It got its name from Charles Bouvard; the court physician to Louis XIII and head of the ‘Jardin du Roi’ in Paris.

Longer shelf life
Advanced genetics and improved growing conditions have prolonged the shelf life of Bouvardia more than ever before. Until recently, Bouvardia had to be treated more or less like ‘royalty’ but that is a thing of the past. However, it has maintained its regal looks.

More colours and new varieties
The number of available colours has been increased considerably. There is currently a whole range of single and double flowered varieties of Bouvardia available.

The new Bouvardia is the ultimate flower for every occasion. On this website, we provide you with inspiring examples!

Care

Bouvardia is a beautiful flower that keeps for over a week. Bouvardia does require some attention and if you wish to enjoy this special flower as long as possible, you can take the following measures:

1. Cut all stems at a slant. Use a very sharp knife for this or use the special Bouvardia knife.
2. Put the flowers in a vase. Add sufficient water and the provided flower food. No flower food enclosed with your bouquet? Use Chrysal Clear, available from your florist.

Further tips:

Bouvardias have a good vase life, provided you look after them. The following tips will help you enjoy your Bouvardias for a long time:

  • Do not put the flowers in a draughty location, near the central heating or in direct sunlight.
  • Bouvardias do absorb a lot of water. Make sure that the vase hold enough water at all times.
  • Make sure that there are no leaves in the water. If necessary, remove a little more of the leaves from the stems. This way, the water remains clean longer and Bouvardia retains more energy for its flowers.

Are the leaves of your Bouvardia drooping? Give it a helping hand! Provided you do not leave it too long, the following measures may do the trick:

  • Remove as many superfluous leaves from the stems. Cut the stems at a slant once again.
  • Wrap the Bouvardia stems in a newspaper and put them back in water with flower food.
  • Leave them standing like this for half a day.
This way, Bouvardia releases less water through its leaves and thanks to reduced evaporation it has the strength to recover.
